Description
The northern auroral electrojet (SAE) index is constructed from 9 ground magnetometers in the northern auroral region. This data set contains a northern auroral electrojet (NAE) index, a northern auroral lower (NAL) index, and a northern auroral upper (NAU) index. Availability of the NAE index may vary from day to day depending upon magnetometer data availabiliy. NAE indices were only produced when data from all stations were available. This data set is nearly conjugate to the SAE index. Details on the magnetometer arrays are available at: Weygand, J.M., and E. Zesta, Comparison of auroral electrojet indices in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, J. Geophys. Res., 113, A08202, doi:10.1029/2008ja013055, 2008.

Parameter #2
Name
Northern Auroral Electrojet Lower Index
ParameterKey
NAL index
Description
These data are the northern auroral electrojet lower index in units of nT at 60 s resolution. These values were determined using the same method as the World Data Center AL index.
Caveats
The 5 quitest days were not alway available from the ground magnetometers. The next available quietest day was used instead. Also be aware of spikes in the data from original magnetometer data sets.
